Acute medical care

Acute medical conditions require care over a short period of time to prevent immune distress from influenza, colds, minor infections, allergic reactions, urinary tract infections, gastrointestinal and respiratory conditions and sexually transmitted infections.

An acute disease is classified as a condition that lasts a specific period of time and can be treated as soon as it is diagnosed.

Acute conditions include the following:

  • Fever is classified as a body temperature that exceeds 37.8 degrees Celsius. Common symptoms include sweating and night chills.
  • Sore throat occurs due to irritation in the throat as a result of infection.
  • Influenza is a viral infection affecting the respiratory system such as the throat, nose and lungs.
  • Acute allergies can be sudden adverse reactions to substances such as pollen, pet dander (dead animal skin cells), certain foods, grass, moulds, latex and insect stings or bites. Acute allergy symptoms can range from mild to severe, causing hives, itchy skin, red and watery eyes, runny nose and anaphylaxis, a fatal condition.
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are bacterial infections that affect any part of the urinary system (bladder, kidneys, ureter and urethra). For example, bladder infections cause debilitative pelvic pain, frequent urination and traces of blood in the urine.
  • Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) arise from sexual contact with people infected with sexually transmitted diseases such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, hepatitis B, herpes and the human papillomavirus (HPV).

Management

Severe acute conditions require immediate medical care to prevent the progression of symptoms that affect the patient’s life. For example, suppose the patient develops an infection; treatment will depend on the cause of infection; in other words, what was the pathogen responsible for the infection? (Was it viral, bacterial or fungal?). For a bacterial infection, Dr Okeke can prescribe antibiotics to relieve the infection. For influenza, staying hydrated and getting plenty of rest is best. However, in some cases, rest and fluid intake are not enough to treat influenza. In the event of severe influenza, Dr Okeke will prescribe antivirals.

Treatment for the following acute conditions includes:

Acute Allergies

By identifying the allergen causing a bad reaction through a skin prick test or blood test, Dr Okeke can prevent a dangerous condition known as anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis makes it challenging to breathe, which in this case may require an epinephrine shot or other injections and treatments.

Vomiting & Diarrhoea

Vomiting and diarrhoea are common signs of gastrointestinal disorders such as gastroenteritis. Gastroenteritis arises from intestinal and stomach inflammation due to the presence of bacteria, parasites or viruses.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)

Antibiotics are used to treat several sexually transmitted diseases (syphilis, gonorrhoea, trichomoniasis and chlamydia). During antibiotic treatment, you should abstain from intercourse for at least seven days after being diagnosed with an STI. However, herpes and HIV require lifelong management through antiviral therapy.

Outlook

After a comprehensive diagnosis, treatment is made possible. As a result, you can expect a speedy recovery in the future.

FAQ

11. What are common types of acute conditions?
  • Burns
  • Anaphylactic reaction
  • Shock
  • Syncope/collapse
  • Panic attack

22. Is pneumonia an acute condition?

Pneumonia is an acute respiratory disease that affects lung capacity. Pneumonia occurs due to an infection that affects the air sacs (alveoli), causing the lungs to fill with fluid.

33. What acute conditions affect the heart?

Untreated coronary artery diseases can lead to acute chest conditions such as ischaemia. As a result, this condition may damage the heart muscle, causing acute heart attack (Acute myocardial infarction). High blood pressure (hypertension) and heart valve disorders can lead to acute heart failure.
