Antenatal Care and Sonars

Early antenatal care is medical supervision provided to mothers in their early stages of pregnancy. Early antenatal care aims to ensure the mother and baby are healthy throughout the pregnancy. Regular consultations involve measuring weight, testing urine, analysing blood samples, and conducting an ultrasound.

An ultrasound scan makes use of sound waves to create clear-cut images of the inside of the body. The choice of a contraceptive method would be decided after a consultation with Dr Okeke. Most contraceptive options are safe if selected and used according to the patient's contraceptive needs and clinical indications. An intrauterine device (IUD) is a safe and commonly used contraceptive. An IUD, the coil, can last up to five years, and a contraceptive Implant (Implanon) on the arm can last up to 3 years.

44. What happens during the first antenatal appointment?

During your first antenatal visit, Dr Okeke will confirm the pregnancy diagnosis. Then, he will carry out a physical exam and inform you of what to expect throughout the pregnancy. In addition, he will offer advice on future pregnancy screenings and tests as well as diet, what to avoid eating, the vitamins you will need to take and habits that need quitting such as smoking, alcohol and substance use which are harmful to the development and viability of the foetus. Depending on the stage in pregnancy, an early ultrasound scan may be conducted to confirm the gestational age of the pregnancy, the number of pregnancies, viability of the pregnancy and the position of the placenta.
